Easy understand about HVAC air filtration & filters.

HVAC Air Filter: An HVAC Filter, also known as an air filter, is a device used in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems to remove air borne particles from the air. These particles may include dust, pollen, mold spores an other contaminants the can affect indoor air quality and potentially cause health problems.

HVAC filters are made of various materials such as fiberglass, pleated paper and washable foam among others. The filter's effectiveness is measured by its MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value), which indicates how well it can capture particles of different size, A higher MERV rating indicates a more efficient filter.

It's important to regularly change or clean the HVAC filter, as a dirty or clogged filter can reduce a air flow, decrease HVAC system efficiency and potentially lead to equipment failure. The frequency of filter replacement or cleaning will depend on factors such as the type of filter, the level of air pollution in the surrounding environment and the frequency of system use.

Type of Filter: There are several type of HVAC filters available, Based on the usage the air filters divided into two major category.

  1. Primary or Pre Air Filter
  2. Secondary or Final Air Filter

Primary or Pre Air Filter: A primary or pre-air filter is the first filter that captures larger particles such as dust, dirt and debris before the air passes through the main filter. It's designed to protect the main filter from clogging with larger particles, which can reduce it's efficiency.

Pre-filter are commonly used in HVAC systems, particularly in commercial and industrial settings where the air is heavily contaminated. these filters are typically made of fibreglass or synthetic materials and have a low MERV rating of 1 to 4.

Using a pre-filter can extend the life of the main filter and reduce maintenance costs. It can also improve indoor air quality by capturing larger particles they can circulate throughout the spacel. In some cases, pre-filters can be washable and reusable, depending on the type and manufacture.

Some of primary or pre-air filter:
  • Disposable pleated filter
  • Washable panel/pleated filter
  • Nylon mash filter
  • Carbon filter
  • Steel mash filter
Secondary or Final Air Filter: A secondary air filter is a filter that is positioned after the primary air filter in air filtration system. It's main purpose is to provide an additional layer of filtration and remove any remaining particles that may have bypassed the primary filter, Secondary filters are typically made of finer materials than primary filters and have a higher efficiency rating.
Final filters are usually high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which can remove up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns.
